World Languages-Spanish: Translation Studies Concentration, Bachelor of Arts
Specific Admission Requirements
Students must be receiving a BA in Spanish to complete the Translation Studies Concentration. Students must have intermediate Spanish proficiency to be admitted into the concentration. Students will have to complete a Modified Oral Proficiency Interview (MOPI) to determine their level.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Apply basic concepts, theories and methods of translation.
- Understand the common problematic areas across all types of translation and how to resolve those issues.
- Navigate specific challenges pertaining to terminology, syntax, grammar, and cultural issues of various types of translation.
- Understand market rates and other entrepreneurial aspects of translation.
- Translate simple texts utilizing various registers (formal, informal) in the areas of marketing, business, law, media, social work, psychology, and/or other fields.
Outcomes Assessment Activities
- The faculty of the Spanish program uses several methods for evaluating student learning outcomes for Spanish majors. These include an oral proficiency interview, a written proficiency test, a student portfolio, and an exit survey.

In addition to the courses listed below, Spanish majors with a Translation Studies Concentration must also meet the following requirements:
- A senior assessment portfolio with a Translation Portfolio section.
- A minor or a second major.
- Completion of the oral and written proficiency exams and of the graduating-senior survey.
- A grade of C or better in all Spanish courses for the major.
